What is a special offer?

Warehouse “special” offers are no different from “specials” available in other businesses. 3PL warehousing operates in much the same way as any other business, where space and services are for sale. A warehouse from time to time will have excess space for a specific period of time. This may be due to seasonal factors or if a new facility has been setup and is not running at optimum capacity. Another warehouse or a business looking for additional warehouse space may be able to avail of this opportunity. The transaction being mutually beneficial to both parties.

Special offers on space and services can be both on long term and short term basis.

Examples of specials:

1. 50,000 sq feet space available at the newly opened facility in North Carolina at a special introductory price of $5 per square foot until Sept 08. Call Bob at ext. 999.

2. Special discounted price available on South Carolina facility of ABC warehousing on all pick and pack services for the first six months of sign up. Call Peter at ext. 888.

The special offers can also be made on fulfillment services, shipping, cross docking, trailer parking etc. This is a great way to attract new business.
Who is a space seeker?

Space seeker is typically a medium sized business looking to outsource their warehousing operations. Businesses seeking space come in all sizes. Typically, these businesses will be e-commerce companies looking to outsource warehousing operations. In other cases, this may be companies looking for specific type of storage location, such as temperature controlled or hazmat, in a specific geographic location.

Space seeker can also be a warehouse looking for additional space during peak season on a short term basis. This web portal strives to promote communication between warehouses, such that by sharing resources, warehouses can run at peak capacity.
What is the purpose for the bulletin board?

Purpose for the bulletin board, is for all users of this web portal, to be able to post advertisements on variety of topics such as equipment for sale, job openings, LTL shipments, industry events etc. This forum will encourage dialog between advertiser and the person desirous of such a offering. All postings will have an expiry date, which will be specified by the user at the time of posting.
What is collaborative warehousing?

Collaborative warehousing can mean many things to many people. The definition that this web portal abides by is to promote cooperation and dialog between 3PL warehouses. This is a new and unchartered territory and holds great promise for optimizing the supply chain. 3PL warehouses stand to gain a lot by mutual cooperation and can optimize their operational capacity.

3PL Warehouses can practice collaborative warehousing by leasing space on a short or long term basis from each other. This benefits a medium or small size 3PL operations, as they will not have to buy into leasing large amout of space on long term basis and setting up all the infrastructure from scratch. The large 3PL can benefit as they typically have the capacity to accomodate more business, especially if they have just leased or setup a new facility.

This model of selling of space between a large 3PL to a small or medium sized 3PL is no different from the model that exists between a wholesaler and a retailer. In this case a large 3PL can act both as a retailer for its customers and also act as a wholesaler by providing space and services on a short or long term basis to smaller 3PLs. A simple non-compete clause is all it takes to make it safe to do business in such a way for all 3PLs in general.

This idea of collaborative warehousing has not been realized so far as there is no viable communication channel where warehouses can advertise their space availability to their peers. We at spacespecials.com, by offering the capability of letting the warehouses post special offers and by the use of the bulletin board, hope to open up the dialog between 3PLs and realize huge savings for them in the very near future.

The collaboration is possible not just in the area of warehouse space, but also in the area of other services offered by the warehouse such as fulfillment, shipping etc.
